Tens of Thousands of Dollars for a Children's party?!
April 19th 2008 01:56
I came across this article from CNN.com...
10,000 USD for child's birthday party
It talked about how some parents splurged on childrens' parties as young as 5 years old (maybe some even younger). Talk about spoiled!
I love my son to death and I'd do anything to make his birthdays and celebrations happy, but not to that expense!
Part of the article reads:
See that part I highlighted? It's ok to indulge because it's about making a memory?! Gee, should I worry about the kind of memories my son would have?
I know the best memories I had of childhood were when I would climb trees and play in the streets with my neighbors or pick fresh fruits during summers. Not the extravagant hotels my parents would take me to, heck I don't even remember why we go to those hotels.
How was she promoting a healthy balance of living year round if "Indulging" means spending tens of thousands for a party kids won't even understand?
I can say this with conviction and I know I won't change my mind no matter what happens. I will not spend that much for my child's parties. Most of the times, it's not the number of people who went or HOW MUCH your giveaways are... it's the time you spent with your close friends and family, the games you enjoyed (which are most of the time inexpensive...).
I was able to give my son one of the biggest birthday parties I've been to (big in size, as in a lot of people) on his first birthday and I spent less than 200USD. I was able to feed at least 50 adults and kids lunch and snacks, rented people to do balloon twisting and face painting as well as have a short magic show. we even had a character cake!
My son definitely did not remember that, but guests, adult and kids alike, still remember it 3 years since.
I was proud of that, I went all over the metro to find the best and cheap finds, and I did!
If I had that much money, I'd rather keep it and spend it on a travel/vacation with my family for some quality time and that's where MEMORIES will definitely be created. They have fond memories, experience and learning.
I just don't agree with spending all that to show people you can. To brag to other parents/families that you can afford to.
If you read that article, one rich dad spent 10Million USD for his daughter's Bat Mitzvah -- complete with 50 Cent, Don Henley and Aerosmith performances.
I just can't help but think about how many houses could've been built for Katrina victims at 10Million USD, or how thousands of children could've had proper HIV/AIDS care with that. Just isn't right anymore.
I honestly belive it's not teaching the children the right values.

Part of the article reads:
She owns Over the Top Productions in Orange County, California, a full-service children's birthday-party planning company. "We really promote a healthy balance of living year round," Dinsfriend says, "but it's OK to indulge your child once a year, because it's about making a memory."

True that. ruined is the more appropriate term...
I am enjoying my little boy and because of stories and children like these, I get paranoid about whether my son's getting spoiled already.
Gaye,
We're kind of having shortage of common sense in our society now from what i see.. haha

What she really means is it's okay to indulge your child once a year, because it's about making me a lot of money.

Most of the time the kids are confused at what's happening or overwhelmed which makes the whole huge party meaningless for them..
thanks for your thoughts Cheryl
